Scojet and Second Harvest Work Together to Expand
The Golden Isles Development Authority (GIDA) announced the expansion of Scojet Inc. and Second Harvest of South Georgia. GIDA has been working with both the manufacturer and nonprofit to coordinate a mutually beneficial agreement that supports each organization’s expansion in Glynn County.
GIDA has been working with Scojet since 2020 on identifying a building that could meet its growth projections. During this time, Second Harvest approached GIDA in search of a facility that would accommodate their existing demand and utilize the grant monies received from the American Rescue Plan Act.
Problem
The precision machining and international manufacturing facility for Scojet in Brunswick, GA needed to expand its operation after the demand for their products grew exponentially over the past several years. In addition to supporting their existing customers, increased production and storage space could provide Scojet the confidence to pursue new contracts while maintaining a high level of service. As a small business, Scojet was seeking building solutions that reduced the upfront costs of a new facility.
During this time, Second Harvest approached GIDA in search of a facility that would accommodate its existing demand and utilize the grant monies received from the American Rescue Plan Act.
Solution
Staff at GIDA proposed a creative solution that incentivized Scojet to build a new $5,000,000 manufacturing facility at North Glynn Commerce Park. Once Scojet vacates its current facility, Second Harvest will begin renovations and move its operations into the former Scojet building in Brunswick-McBride Industrial Park.
North Glynn Commerce Park is owned and operated by the GIDA. With Board approval, GIDA has the opportunity to provide competitive land pricing, expedited permitting, and other incentives for businesses in target industries, including manufacturing.
Results
The Board of Governors approved the incentive package for Scojet at their November 2, 2021, meeting. The competitive incentive package for Scojet’s new facility includes up to $200,000 towards site-work improvements and deferred land payment for five years.
All incentives will be contingent on Scojet vacating their current facility on or before January 15, 2023, creating 15 jobs with a minimum salary of $40,000/year, and investing $5,000,000 in the new facility.
